Chemical descaling, or pickling, is a vital process in maintaining the integrity of stainless steel by removing tightly adhered oxide films. These films, created during high-temperature operations such as welding and heat treatment, can compromise the performance of stainless steel if not properly addressed. Traditionally, nitric acid combined with hydrofluoric acid (HF) has been the go-to pickling solution due to its effectiveness. However, the hazards associated with HF have driven the industry to seek safer alternatives. Astro Pak has adopted and refined a solution: Citric Acid-ABF.
Understanding Pickling and Its Challenges
Defined in ASTM A380, pickling is the most aggressive chemical cleaning process used on stainless steel and other engineering alloys. While effective, the traditional Nitric Acid-HF blend poses significant safety risks. Hydrofluoric acid is highly corrosive and dangerous, capable of causing severe chemical burns, penetrating the skin, and damaging internal tissues and bones. As a liquid, HF is also prone to spills and splashes during handling.
Similarly, nitric acid presents its own set of risks. This corrosive mineral acid can cause serious injuries upon contact, inhalation, or ingestion. These hazards necessitate strict handling protocols, making traditional pickling solutions difficult to manage in certain environments.
Astro Pak’s Safer Alternative
Astro Pak has pioneered a safer approach by replacing HF with ammonium bifluoride (ABF) and nitric acid with citric acid. This blend forms Citric Acid-ABF, a pickling solution that reduces risk while maintaining effectiveness.
- ABF Advantages: As a dry fluoride compound, ABF is easier to transport, measure, and mix than HF.
- Citric Acid Benefits: Recognized as generally safe (GRAS) by the FDA, citric acid is far less hazardous than nitric acid. Its milder properties also reduce the likelihood of over-pickling, which can severely etch the stainless steel surface.
Testing and Validation
To ensure that Citric Acid-ABF matches the performance of traditional pickling solutions, Astro Pak’s Technical Services team conducted rigorous testing. The solution was applied to heavily oxidized heat-affected zones (HAZ) on 316L stainless steel welds. After pickling and passivation, the welds passed visual inspections for residual scale and free iron. They also met the standards of ASTM A380 and ASTM A967 through Copper Sulfate and Ferroxyl Tests.
While Citric Acid-ABF may require elevated temperatures and extended processing times compared to Nitric Acid-HF, it delivers comparable results. In cases of severe heat damage, additional steps, such as decarbonization, may be necessary. Astro Pak’s team can evaluate the initial weld quality and recommend the appropriate process adjustments.
Advantages of Citric Acid-ABF
Citric Acid-ABF offers several benefits over traditional solutions:
- Improved Safety: Reduces risks to personnel and sensitive equipment.
- Ease of Handling: ABF’s dry form minimizes spill hazards, and citric acid is easier to transport and manage.
- Surface Protection: Citric acid reduces the risk of over-pickling, helping maintain the stainless steel surface finish.
Considerations for Any Pickling Solution
While Citric Acid-ABF is a safer and effective alternative, all pickling processes share some common considerations:
- Pre-Cleaning: Removing oils and greases is critical, as they interfere with the pickling process.
- Waste Management: All pickling solutions generate hazardous waste that must be disposed of properly.
- Surface Changes: Pickling can roughen finely polished surfaces, and a post-pickling passivation step may be needed to enhance corrosion resistance.
Why Astro Pak Recommends Citric Acid-ABF
Astro Pak regards Citric Acid-ABF as a superior choice for stainless steel pickling when elevated temperatures are available. This solution combines safety, ease of use, and effectiveness, ensuring optimal results with reduced hazards. Additionally, a separate passivation process can be employed after pickling to further enhance the chromium-enriched passive layer of stainless steel, improving its corrosion resistance and durability.
Astro Pak continues to prioritize innovative, safe, and effective solutions for chemical cleaning. With Citric Acid-ABF, industries can achieve high-performance pickling results while significantly reducing risks to workers and equipment.
