Astro Pak has coast to coast Cleanroom Services facilities that feature ISO 14644-1 certified Class 5, 6, or 7 cleanrooms and labs of varying sizes and capabilities. Both are highly controlled environments that enable processes such as ultrasonic cleaning, pressure and cold shock testing, clean assembly, vacuum sealed packaging, and cleanliness verification for particle count, TFS, NVR. Our Cleanroom Services locations maintain AS9100 certified Quality Management Systems.

Large Component Cleanroom

Our California Cleanroom houses three large ultrasonic cleaning units (8’L x 3’W x 3’H).  One of the highlights of this facility is the a 21,222 cubic ft Large Component Cleanroom that features a 26’x15’ high-speed roll up door, 18′ ceilings, 2,500 psi high pressure spray system and two-ton overhead bridge crane to accommodate large hardware.

Florida Cleanroom Hose Tower

Located just outside the Kennedy Space Center, Astro Pak’s 38,000 sq. ft. Space Coast facility houses three L-Shaped Tanks (22’L x 3’W x 4’H by 3’L x 2’W x 4’H).  The highlight of this facility is the 15’x15’ enclosed tower (70’ vertical) which enables the processing of convoluted hoses up to 60’ in length indoors in a vertical orientation.

Precision Cleaning Techniques

Flushing

Flush Cleaning

This method is particularly useful for precision cleaning of components of varying shape and size for which high-pressure sprays are not useful. Using a turbulent velocity, cleaning liquids are flooded through the interior of tubes, pipes, and other internal pathways to flush the contaminants out of the hardware or component as it rotates.

AqueousCleaning

Aqueous Cleaning

This water-based cleaning method is very effective at removing different soils on parts that are compatible with water and allows parts to have a long dwell time in the cleaning solution. Detergents and surfactants are added to water that has been treated by deionization or reverse osmosis. The result is in an environmentally friendly method for achieving the desired level of cleanliness.

Wipe Cleaning

This method uses special lint- and particle-free wipes or swabs, often wetted with solvents or deionized water, to hand clean delicate surfaces that cannot withstand more aggressive cleaning methods.

UltrasonicCleaning

Ultrasonic Cleaning

This technique uses cavitation which is induced by high frequency sound waves to agitate the cleaning solution aiding in dislodging particles. It is particularly effective for precision parts cleaning of complex parts with threads, rough surfaces and blind interior spots that are inaccessible by other cleaning methods. Ultrasonic cleaning typically employs aqueous, semi-aqueous and solvent-based cleaning detergents. This combination removes contaminants at nearly a microscopic level, with higher sound frequencies generally able to remove finer particles.

Solvent Cleaning

Cleaning with solvents is particularly effective on parts with complex configurations and for certain soil compositions. This method utilizes the chemical properties of the solvent to remove the contaminants from the part. For some applications, solvent cleaning is used in conjunction with ultrasonic cleaning.

High Pressure Spray

High-Pressure Spray Cleaning

Utilizing the kinetic energy of a water jet to “blast” the particles and soils from a surface, this technique is most often used in conjunction with detergents or surfactants to chemically loosen or solubilize the soils in order for the water jet to more effectively remove the contaminants from the surface. The ability to vary the water pressure, nozzle size and/or spray pattern allows this method to be easily customizable for different materials of construction and soil compositions.

Frequently Asked Questions

ISO 6 or Class 1,000 is a cleanroom classification that measures the cleanliness level of a cleanroom, which is measured by the maximum limit of particle volume and size that is allowed per cubic meter of air inside a cleanroom.  A common misunderstanding is that a component needs to be cleaned to a level that allows its use within a specific class of cleanroom. Instead, components are cleaned to meet a measured limit of contaminants, such as the Particle Count and/or Non-Volatile Residue (NVR), which are typically supplied by the customer or defined by an industry standard. ​

Most stainless steels (especially austenitic types) can be passivated, but levels of improvement vary between alloy type and quality of surface chemistry present.

Astro Pak provides comprehensive certification documentation packages that comply with QMS/cGMP guidelines. Our certification packages are frequently used as the standard for numerous public and private sectors and entities.

In some cases, we are able to assess RA, verify dewpoint, and conduct NVR analysis.

We conduct iron readings of the solution circulating the system.  At the beginning of the passivation process, iron concentration levels start out high and gradually taper off and plateau when all the iron is removed. Additionally, we know that 2% citric will hold in solution 1% iron (1 % iron is equal to 10,000ppm).  We typically see iron concentration levels in the 1 to 50 ppm levels in our passivation.  Our proprietary blend uses substantially higher percentages of citric to ensure that all iron is captured before the acid is exhausted.
