Large-Scale Tank Cleaning & Passivation
Astro Pak was contracted to clean and passivate four newly fabricated stainless steel tanks for a major paper products manufacturer. The vessels, ranging from 26 to 42 feet in height, were delivered onsite prior to commissioning and required controlled cleaning and passivation to meet production readiness requirements.
Challenge
The tanks arrived with interior contamination from fabrication activities and environmental exposure. Their size and confined space entry requirements created challenges related to access, safety, and achieving consistent surface conditions across all internal areas.
Solution
Astro Pak implemented a comprehensive on-site cleaning and passivation process designed to safely remediate contamination and prepare the tanks for service.
-
Applied phosphoric-based cleaning chemistry to remove fabrication debris and construction residue
-
Performed full interior hand scrubbing followed by controlled power washing
-
Utilized scaffolding and confined space entry procedures to access all internal surfaces
Following cleaning, a systematic passivation process was executed:
-
Conducted detailed surface inspections and re-treated localized areas as required
-
Applied nitric acid-based chemistry to establish a uniform passive surface condition
-
Processed each tank from top to bottom to ensure consistent stainless steel protection
Strict safety and operational controls were maintained throughout the project, including dedicated air supply, standby rescue, and rotating crews to support continuous progress.
Outcome
The project resulted in fully cleaned and passivated stainless steel tanks ready for production service. Astro Pak met safety, quality, and schedule requirements while demonstrating its capability to support large-scale equipment preparation within the pulp and paper industry.
