Hyperscale Data Center Technical Water Commissioning

Astro Pak supported the launch of a new hyperscale cloud data center by preparing a stainless steel technical water system used to cool high density processor racks. The project focused on cleaning, passivation, and flushing of the secondary fluid network to support reliable circulation through micro-scale cooling channels.

Challenge

The data center required a stainless steel secondary fluid network capable of carrying a glycol-based technical water mixture through thousands of cooling plates with channels measured in tens of microns. Construction debris, fabrication residue, or corrosion products posed a risk of flow restriction, reduced heat transfer, or blockage at the processor level.

The owner also required detailed engineering documentation and cleanliness verification comparable to standards used for critical utility systems. All activities needed to be coordinated with an aggressive construction schedule and performed without introducing additional contaminants into the sealed piping network.

Solution

Astro Pak’s engineering and field teams developed a comprehensive cleaning and commissioning plan for the technical water system. This included pre-construction review of piping design to confirm cleanability and flushing paths, along with selection of chemistries compatible with stainless steel and the specified glycol-water mixture.

Portions of the stainless steel piping were cleaned and passivated in controlled shop environments, then dried, capped, and shipped to the site. After installation, Astro Pak mobilized dedicated data center flushing equipment to perform sequential high velocity flushing and chemical cleaning of the assembled system.

The technical fluid was filtered to the required particulate level and used to fill the system under controlled conditions. Field technicians verified flow performance and collected samples to document cleanliness and system readiness.

Outcome

The project delivered a clean, passivated technical water network that met the operator’s specifications and supported reliable heat removal for the new data center. The completed documentation package established a baseline for future maintenance flushing and system monitoring. By combining engineered planning, controlled processing, and on-site precision cleaning, Astro Pak helped reduce the risk of fouling, blockages, and unplanned downtime in critical cloud infrastructure.
